Evacuation from the place of fire and the art of first aid! Summary of Safety Week 2019

The Sixth Week of Safety organized by companies associated in the Agreement for Safety in Construction is already behind us. This year, organizing trainings, workshops, demonstrations and actions under the slogan "Never go shortcuts", we put a particular emphasis on making everyone aware of the role of each of us in protecting the health and life of our own and our colleagues.

In Mota-Engil Central Europe, one of the most interesting events was the trial evacuation from the construction that we practiced in the area of the Selvita research and development center in Krakow that we are building. Our task was to properly react to the situation of the threat signaled by floating smoke on the 2nd floor of the building.

Scenario: During work, the employee noticed the smoke coming out from one of the rooms located on the second floor, about which he immediately informed his supervisor. A fire in the building was reported to the Construction Manager, who ordered the evacuation of the facility. 64 employees were evacuated from the building to a collection area, where one employee was found absent. A firefighter arrived, went to the "burning" building, from which he entered out a faint employee, and then gave him first aid. Firefighter discussed the most common mistakes during the evacuation of people from dangerous places and presented the principles of correct evacuation. Training was also carried out on the proper use of fire extinguishers.

This year, together with other companies of the Agreement for Safety in Construction, we participated in the first aid competition. The competition consisted of each first aid team being given assistance to the injured at 8 simulation stations, in which the circumstances of the event and the behavior of the injured were similar to the actual accident situations. During exercise, competitors gave first aid in the following situations:

 - the victim who has suffered a hand amputation,
- a person injured in a traffic accident,
- first aid for infants,
- first aid for people suffering from diabetes,
- to the victim as a result of falling from a height,
- CPR exercises on phantoms,
- epilepsy attack,
- flooding.

The competition was conducted on the basis of the European Resuscitation Council Guidelines of 2015, and the judges were medical rescuers. During the exercises, paramedics conducted workshops on first aid, during which they were trained on phantoms and quizzes were solved. One of the competition tasks was the knowledge test in the field of first aid.

We send heartfelt thanks for: Zenon Lipian, Krzysztof Kubik, Krzysztof Dudek for representing our company in the competition, as well as thanks to the management of the S17 Skrudka-Sielce Contracts Mr. Andrzej Szkuat and Łukasz Przygoda for sending the team representing our company in the competition
